Description
From the depths of San Diego's graffiti-soaked hip hop underground comes Romali Licudan aka Rom1. Like most artists growing up in his generation, he draws from the urban flavors of graf, but what his mind captures and digests, his hands expectorate a twisted visage of exaggerated shapes and forms that move with whispers of abstract beats. His work speaks of a vintage sensibility mixed with a futuristic soul. Rom1's approach to his craft is boundless, as any single work often employs a variety of media, techniques, and styles during its creation.

His latest work, an outwardly sepulchral and brooding piece entitled Don't Fall, captures not only his dark life experiences, but also communicates a hope of emergence and inner strength from the depths of Rom1's palette. The piece is cut and printed in a unique size and presented on high-quality heavyweight matte paper. The detail that Rom1 incorporated through his brush strokes needs to be seen with one's own eyes, as an Internet-ready scan could never do it justice.

Calling Rom1's work an evolution of graffiti -- a flaunting and boisterous style -- is arguable. However, as more of Rom1's work is released, one will see that his canvas is as much a freeway wall as it is a page in his personal diary containing the intimate visual poetry of one of San Diego's most gifted sons.
